The University of Queensland Pipe Band at Emmanuel College has hit new highs at the 2014 Queensland Pipe Band Championships following its promotion to Grade 3 earlier in the year.
The upgrade follows national and international achievements including four competition trophies from Scotland as well as winning the Grade 4 Queensland Championships two years in a row.
In addition to the win, the band won the President’s Trophy, the Harry Treeby Memorial Trophy for best Pipe Corps and the Quentin Baille Memorial Trophy for best Drum Corps.
Despite rain soaking the band members and instruments in fine tuning, Pipe Major Andrew McCabe said the band played extremely well in their first Grade 3 competition.
“We have put a lot of time and effort in improving our skills, and we are looking forward to building on and improving from the Queensland Championships.”
The day also saw several UQ pipers presented with certificates by Chairman Donald MacSween from Pipe Bands Queensland. Four pipers were awarded Certificates in their instrument from the Australian Pipe Band College after successfully completing both theory and practical examinations.
The Queensland Pipe Band Championships were hosted at Yandina by the Sunshine Coast Pipes and Drums this month.
